Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt with a New Coil?
You've just popped in a brand-new coil, filled up your tank, and taken that first puff... only to be hit with a horrible burnt taste. Annoying, right? You paid good money for a fresh coil, so why does it taste like you've been licking an ashtray?
Here's the good news: this happens to loads of vapers, not just you. In most cases, it's an easy problem to fix, and an even easier one to avoid next time. Let's break down why a new coil can taste burnt, and what you can do about it.
What's Actually Happening Inside Your Coil
Before we get into the reasons, it helps to know how a coil works. Don't worry, we'll keep it simple.
Inside every coil sits a small piece of cotton wrapped around a thin wire. That cotton soaks up e-liquid, a bit like a sponge soaks up water. When you fire the device (or just inhale, on some pod kits), the wire heats up. That heat turns the wet e-liquid into vapour, and vapour is what you actually breathe in.
The trouble starts when the cotton runs dry. If there's no e-liquid left in a spot to turn into vapour, the wire heats the bare cotton instead. Burnt cotton smells and tastes awful, and once it's scorched, there's no bringing that flavour back. This dry, scratchy taste is often called a "dry hit," and it's the number one reason a vape tastes burnt.
So the real question is: why is the cotton drying out on a coil you just fitted? Here are the usual suspects.
1. You Didn't Let the New Coil Rest First
This is the single biggest cause of a burnt new coil. Straight out of the packet, the cotton inside is completely dry. If you fit the coil, fill the tank, and start puffing right away, the outside of the cotton might feel damp, but the middle is still bone dry.
The fix is simple: give it a rest. Once you've fitted a new coil and filled your tank, let it sit for about 10 minutes before your first puff. This gives the e-liquid time to soak all the way through the cotton, not just the edges. Some vapers also add a couple of drops of e-liquid straight onto the coil before fitting it, just to give it a head start.
Skipping this step is probably the single biggest reason people ruin a coil on day one. If you're setting up a new device from scratch, take a look at our vape kits range, and always prime before you fire it up properly.
2. You Started on Too High a Wattage
Every coil has a wattage range it's built for, usually printed right on the side of the coil. Fire it up at the top of that range (or above it) straight away, and it heats up faster than the cotton can keep up with. That means dry patches, and dry patches burn.
Start low. If your coil is rated 20 to 40 watts, begin around 20 to 25 watts for the first few puffs, then slowly turn it up over the next tank or two. This gives the cotton time to "break in" properly. Most decent mods and tanks let you adjust the wattage easily, so there's really no excuse for skipping this step.
3. You're Chain Vaping
Taking puff after puff without a break is called chain vaping, and it's one of the fastest ways to kill a fresh coil. Every puff uses up e-liquid from the cotton. If you don't leave a gap between puffs, the cotton doesn't get the chance to soak up more juice before it gets heated again.
Try leaving 15 to 20 seconds between puffs, especially during the first day or two with a new coil. Your throat, and your wallet, will thank you, since a coil that's looked after properly simply lasts longer.
4. Your E-Liquid Is Too Thick, or Your Tank Is Running Low
E-liquid is mostly made from two ingredients: PG and VG. PG is thin and carries flavour well, while VG is thicker and makes bigger clouds. Thicker, high-VG juice doesn't always soak into small coils as easily, which can leave dry spots even when your tank looks full.
If you're using a coil built for a smaller, mouth-to-lung device, a 50/50 e-liquid usually wicks better than a much thicker short fill. Not sure which ratio suits your setup? Our guide on 50/50 vs 70/30 e-liquid explains it in plain English.
Keep an eye on your tank level too. Letting it run low and vaping anyway is a guaranteed way to dry out a coil. Try topping up before it drops below a quarter full, whether you're using nic salt e-liquid or a biggershort fill bottle.
5. Your Airflow Is Set Too Tight
If the air holes on your tank are closed up too much, less air flows over the coil. Less airflow means heat builds up in one spot instead of spreading out, and that heat dries the cotton out faster than it can be refilled. Try opening your airflow ring up a notch and see if the taste improves. It often makes the whole vape feel smoother too.
6. It Might Just Be New Coil Residue
Sometimes an odd taste on the very first puff isn't burning at all. Coils are made in factories, and tiny traces of oil or dust from manufacturing can cling to the cotton. Properly priming your coil, as we mentioned above, usually flushes this out within the first tank of e-liquid. If a strange taste doesn't fade after that, it's more likely one of the other causes on this list.
Quick Reference: Common Causes at a Glance
Here's the whole list in one place, so you can spot your problem fast.
| Cause | Signs to Look Out For | Quick Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Coil not primed | Burnt taste from the very first puff | Fill the tank and let it rest for 10 minutes before vaping |
| Wattage too high | Harsh, dry-feeling hits early on | Start at the low end of the coil's range, then build up slowly |
| Chain vaping | Taste gets worse the more you puff | Leave 15 to 20 seconds between puffs |
| E-liquid too thick, or tank low | Gurgling, weak vapour, dry patches | Match your VG/PG ratio to the coil, and keep the tank topped up |
| Airflow too tight | Hot device, harsh throat hit | Open the airflow ring up a notch |
| Factory residue | Odd (not burnt) taste that fades quickly | Prime fully; the taste should clear within a tank of use |
How to Fix a Burnt Taste
If your coil already tastes burnt, here's what to check first:
- Is your tank actually full? Top it up if not.
- Is your wattage set too high for the coil? Turn it down.
- Have you been chain vaping? Give it a five-minute break.
- Try a few gentle "dry pulls," puffing on the mouthpiece without firing it, to help pull liquid through the cotton.
If none of that helps, the cotton is probably already irreversibly scorched. Once cotton burns, no amount of resting or refilling brings the flavour back. At that point, it's time to swap in a fresh coil from our coils range and start the priming process again, properly this time.
Keeping Your Coils Fresh for Longer
A few small habits go a long way toward stopping this happening again:
- Always prime a new coil and let it rest for around 10 minutes before vaping.
- Start low on wattage and build up slowly over a tank or two.
- Leave a short gap between puffs instead of chain vaping.
- Keep your tank topped up rather than running it dry.
- Match your e-liquid's VG/PG ratio to your device and coil.
Get these right, and your coils should last noticeably longer, which means fewer replacements, less waste, and every puff tasting the way it's supposed to.
Final Thoughts
A burnt taste from a new coil is frustrating, but it's almost always fixable, or at least avoidable next time round. Nine times out of ten, it comes down to one simple thing: the cotton wasn't given enough e-liquid before it met the heat. Prime it properly, keep your wattage sensible, and don't rush your puffs, and the team here at Fogfathers reckon you'll be back to a smooth, flavourful vape in no time.
